Philly (Exton) CF Job available

I was hoping to have more time to get my ducks in a row before making an official announcement, but something's come up with a sense of urgency, so I'm just going to kind of unload on you. Sorry about that.

I'm taking over as the manager of the Philly CFUG. I'm still working out the details of organizing our next meeting, but in the meantime I've setup a Twitter account, should you care to follow it.

Now, on to more pressing matters. I just posted this to the PhillyCFUG blog, and it went out via email to the blog subscribers. I figure it can't hurt to cross-post it here as well.

Automated Financial Systems, in Exton, is looking for a ColdFusion developer for immediate assistance. Some experience in server administration would be a bonus.

They don't have an in-house resource for ColdFusion development, but have an immediate need to address errors that their website is generating, as well as a security issue; and they hope to have these problems addressed by Wednesday of next week – November 4th.

In addition, they would like assistance upgrading from an older version of ColdFusion (they think 5) to version 7.

Contact Jerry ThompSon via email (JThompSon@afsvision.com) or via mobile phone (610-496-1456).

Philly Area ColdFusion Developers: Happy Hour!

The developers at my office, Wharton Computing, get together monthly to remind ourselves that we are all normal (well, mostly normal) people with interests and hobbies outside of work, and to relax a little bit; and we're extending the invitation to the entire PhillyCFUG group.

It's a great opportunity to blow off a little steam, get to know your peers, and if you're into that sort of thing, do some networking. (You know, we do have a couple of open positions. You can search in the Org "Wharton Computing and Instructional Technology")

This month we're meeting TOMORROW — June 4th — at 4:00 pm, at Slainté, on the corner of 30th and Market — the opposite corner from 30th Street Station. Typically we're there until at least 6:00, but the bar has a great atmosphere and I've personally stayed at one of our happy hours until around 9:30, just hanging out talking about geeky stuff with a bunch of people, before retreating to the suburbs.

It's a great time, and we hope you'll come join us.

See you there!

Come see Mark Drew at the next Philly CFUG Meeting!

I just wanted to remind you of the upcoming Philly CFUG meeting, this Thursday, 5/28 from 6:00-7:30.

Mark Drew will be presenting on the ColdSpring framework (used for Inversion of Control, specifically Dependency Injection, as well as Aspect Oriented Programming). If you're at all interested in Object-Oriented Programming in ColdFusion, or have been thinking about learning ColdSpring, I highly recommend this presentation. Mark makes it easy to get started, and shows just how powerful ColdSpring can be.

The meeting is at Wharton's Jon M. Huntsman Hall, room F90, conveniently located near the 37th Street trolley stop, and rumor has it there will be punch and pie.

You can find more information on the Philly CFUG site on Adobe Groups.

See you there!

Philly CFUG Scorpio Presentation

Of course there have been numerous blogs about features announced at other meetings (I liked this one, and this one, among many others) but tonight I attended our very own CFUG meeting, and not only that, it was my first.

Among all of the new tags and functionality announced, I think I'm most excited about the return of the debugger, the new image handling, the ability for CFLoop to natively parse files (by line, or by bytes), the server monitoring utilities, and of course the AJAX tags. I would have liked to have seen the debugger in action, but we were pushing 3 hours as it was with fairly few questions, and had to bail before they started drawing names to give away schwag (including a copy of Scorpio itself!), since my carpooling buddy was out passed his curfew.

The CFPDF tag set looks interesting and very useful, but my current clients don't do a whole lot with PDFs and my past clients only made limited use of PDF forms. I can see that it has great potential, but I don't see myself putting it to great use for a while.

One thing that this has reminded me of, for sure, is that I have become very comfortable inside my box. For the most part, the things that I've been developing could run just fine on CF5. (I blame the customer!) I have come away from the meeting inspired to learn some of the great things that MX7 made available, but at the same time, I feel like I'm already spoiled and have absolutely no motivation to try and learn AJAX "the hard way." Why should I bother, when I've seen how easy it will be in just a few short months?

I'm not sure how much of this has already been announced, but here's a list of stuff that caught my attention enough for me to write down:
